We welcome our 3D MOT back to the lab

Image of the optimized 2D MOT operated on the broad 1S0 - 1P1 transition at 399nm.

Shortly after the 2D MOT we trap atoms again int the 3D MOT. We now use diagonal beams inclined by 59 degrees with only 8mm diameter - signififcantly steeper and smalller than in our old setup. We operate our 3D MOT exclusively on a broadened intercombination ¹S₀ -³P₁ transition and achieve loading rates of around 5 million atoms per second.

Single Fermionic Yb atoms in optical tweezers

After successful optimization of trapping and imaging of individual bosonic 174Yb atoms we have now succeeded in trapping fermionic 173Yb atoms in triple (1S0, 3P0, 3P1) magic optical tweezers at 759nm using the magic angle for the polarization of the tweezer light.

First single Yb atoms in optical tweezers in Hamburg!

For the first time we have loaded individual 174Yb atoms in a small tweezer array at a wavelength of 532nm. Atoms are imaged on the 1S0 -3P1 transition.
