Macroscopic quantum mechanics in gravitational-wave observatories and beyond

Recent observations on the GW observatories LIGO and Virgo showed that the quantum uncertainty of intense laser light affected the quantum uncertainty of 40 kg mirrors. We review these observations and provide links to fundamental physical research.
