This compromises Germany as a location for science. Science depends on open-mindedness, international cooperation, democracy and the rule of law, as well as freedom of research and teaching. Bad Honnef, 2 February 2024 – With their declaration, the mathematical and scientific societies – the umbrella organisation of geosciences (DVGeo), the German Mathematical Society (DMV), the German Physical Society (DPG), the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) and the Association of Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany (VBIO) – defend themselves against nationalist and anti-democratic efforts of all kinds. In doing so, they are sending a signal for freedom of research, democracy and the rule of law, as well as open-mindedness and international cooperation. These points are prerequisites for the scientific, economic and social well-being of our country – and thus also for the individual standard of living of each and every citizen.
