Awards, honors, and prizes for members of the Department of Physics
Members of the Department of Physics have received a number of regional, national, and international awards, honors, and prizes. Prizes and awards conferred by the Department of Physics itself and doctoral prizes from DESY’s friends association Verein der Freunde und Förderer des DESY are listed separately.
Prizewinners
Otto Stern Prize
Awarded by the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Physik an der Universität Hamburg for the best master’s thesis in physics. Since its inception in 2005, the prize has been awarded at a special ceremony once a semester.
It includes a certificate, a trophy, a book (Otto Stern’s biography), and €500.
Otto Stern (born in Sohrau, Upper Silesia on 17 February 1888; died in Berkeley, USA on 17 August 1969) worked at the Physikalische Staatsinstitut at Jungiusstrasse 9 from the beginning of 1923 until he was forced to flee in 1933, turning the institute into one of the world’s leading centers for atomic and molecular research. One of his most significant discoveries in Hamburg was the “Anomolous Magnetic Moment” of protons, making it clear that the proton could not be an elementary particle. In 1943, Otto Stern was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for, among other work, this discovery.

Jean-Marie Lehn and Klaus von Klitzing-Preis
Awarded by the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Physik an der Universität Hamburg and the Freundes- und Förderverein Chemie der Universität Hamburg for the best master’s thesis in the nanosciences.
It includes a certificate, a trophy, and €500.
The award is named after Jean-Marie Lehn (born on 30 September 1939 in Rosheim, Alsace) and Klaus von Klitzing (born on 28 June 1943 in Schroda).
Jean-Marie Lehn is a pioneer in supramolecular chemistry. Together with Donald Dram and Charles Pedersen, he received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work in this field in 1987. Supramolecular chemistry focuses on the association of molecules and suprastructures that are held together by noncovalent bonds. It later gave rise to the chemistry of self-organizing processes and adaptive chemistry.
Klaus von Klitzing discovered the quantum Hall effect, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1985. The quantum Hall effect was one of the spring boards for nanoelectronics and facilitated the study of the physical properties of semiconductors far below the scale of microelectronics at the time.

Evaluating teaching
Students evaluate their teachers. Every semester, auditors of the physics lectures are asked to complete questionnaires about the lectures and practical courses. Questions include how well the instructor was able to explain the topic; how well the lecture was structured; and whether the level of complexity was suitable. An award goes to the best practical course instructors and the best lectures at the end of the semester, with separate awards going to course-related lectures and special lectures.

Hamburg Teaching Prize
The Hamburg Teaching Prize has been awarded annually since 2009 by the Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts to honor outstanding and innovative teaching by professors, lecturers, and research associates at Hamburg’s 6 public universities.
The Hamburg Teaching Prize is awarded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Equalities. A total of 14 individual prizes are up for award: one award per higher education institution or faculty. Each award is worth €10,000.
Only students are entitled to submit nominations for the Hamburg Teaching Prize. A faculty jury including student representatives will evaluate the students’ suggestions and nominate a candidate or a teaching staff team.
Members of the Department of Physics who have received the prize:
Dipl.-Phys. Martin Stieben (2024)
Dipl.-Phys. Martin Stieben from the PHYSnet-Rechenzentrum received the Hamburg Teaching Prize in 2024 for the course Computeranwendungen in der Physik: Parallelisierung und Hochleistungsrechnen.
Dr. Andrea Thorn (2023)

Doctoral prize of the Verein der Freunde und Förderer des DESY
The prize is conferred annually for an outstanding dissertation that is based on DESY’s research program. It amounts to €3,000, which can be split between 2 prizewinners.
Doctoral researchers in the Department of Physics regularly win the prize due to the close cooperation between the Department of Physics at the University of Hamburg and DESY.
