We mourn
Prof. Dr. Georg Zimmerer
* 15 December 1939 in Pforzheim † 22 May 2022 in Halstenbek
Our universally admired colleague Prof. Dr. Emeritus Georg Zimmerer died on Sunday, 22 May 2022. He was 82 years old.
Dr. Zimmerer, born on 15 December 1939, received his doctorate at the University of Marburg and, on 1 May 1971, he came to Hamburg, where he completed his Habilitation in experimental physics in 1976. The title of his Habilitation is Optical Excitation and Decay Processes in Rare Gases (und sieben Veröffentlichungen dieses Gebietes). He served as an academic advisor in the Department of Physics until 1978 before receiving an appointment in 1979 as a C2 professor in the former II. Institut für Experimentalphysik. His research focused on studying the time-resolved excitation and luminescence spectra of solid objects and molecules. The measuring station at the DORIS storage ring, built under his supervision for these research purposes, was used very successfully by his group in cooperation with many German and international groups. Georg Zimmerer was the motivating force behind these efforts. After he retired in 2005, he continued to actively follow developments and maintained close contact to his colleagues. Georg Zimmerer was always keenly interested in the development of his department and strongly championed teaching and doctoral and early career researchers. Among other things, he passionately fostered the further development of teaching in his capacity as departmental representative, and he worked on many committees in academic self-governance. As a teacher, he was particularly enthusiastic about regenerative energy. As a founding member of the association of friends and sponsors of physics at Universität Hamburg (Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Physik an der Universität Hamburg), he was active in the association and, after his retirement, continued for many years as the association’s treasurer. We fondly remember the many years of excellent collaboration and will honor him accordingly.We also extend our condolences to his family.
