FAQ
Address change
To change your address, please use the change of address option in your STiNE account. In the menu item "User account" under "Personal data" you can view and change the address stored for you under "Home address". Please check regularly whether the address you have provided in your STiNE account is still up-to-date and check the data you entered. A current address is important so that mail from the University of Hamburg (e.g. semester documents with student ID and semester ticket) can be delivered to you.
Please note, that it is only possible to enter a German address.
Change of address in case of address beyond the context of enrollment
If you are still in the phase of enrollment and therefore still have an address abroad, the change of address is not possible in your STiNE account, but only via the Application and Admission Team of the Service for Students.
Recognition / crediting
Recognition of achievements - legal basis § 8 MIN PO (1) Study periods, study achievements, examination achievements as well as occupational studies or internships integrated into the study program which has been completed at a university, equivalent university, in state-recognized distance learning programs, at other educational institutions, in particular in study programs at state or state-recognized universities of cooperative education as well as at universities of applied sciences, shall be recognized upon application by the student(s), provided that there are no significant differences between the knowledge and skills acquired and those to be acquired at the receiving university. Recognition under conditions is possible.
(3) Knowledge and skills acquired in a manner other than through a course of study, which are equivalent to those and are required for successful completion of a course of study, shall be acknowledged to the extent of up to half of the study and examination credits to be taken.
Important information:
1. by applying for recognition, you declare your intention to include the requested achievement in your degree program instead of a module that you would otherwise take.
Therefore, please submit applications for recognition of achievements for the compulsory elective and/or elective area at a time when you will foreseeably not take any further modules. In the Bachelor's program, this is towards the end of the program, in the Master's program, this is usually at the end of the specialization phase and before registration for the research phase.
2. the application for recognition must be made before entering the corresponding examination. Recognition, e.g. after failing an examination twice, is therefore not possible. The only exception is if the applicant has completed the examination to be recognized - e.g. during a semester abroad - at such a late point in time. With the successful or unsuccessful completion of a module, recognition is generally ruled out. When submitting your application, please ensure that you are not in an examination, i.e. that you have not registered for an examination in the module for which you are applying for recognition.
The academic office will be happy to advise you on all questions regarding the assessment of creditability, allocation, workload (CP), grade conversion, etc. before you submit your application.
Procedure:
- Fill out the application for recognition in the STINE account
under 'Study administration > Applications > V Fak MIN- Application for recognition of achievements'.
• IMPORTANT: The more detailed the applicant fills out the form, the easier and faster the application process will be! Please also refer to the handout no. 1.
• Various information about the previous studies and/or the stay abroad and/or the training
• Make concrete proposals >> Which modules should be recognized for which study achievements with how many credit points and which grade?
• Information about the assignment of the achievements (Which specialization in the Master? Elective area or ABK etc.)
• Do not forget the details of the study program and the relevant academic office. - Submitting the application in STINE
- The applicant informs the academic office by e-mail that the application has been sent
- Please indicate the application number.
- must be included as an attachment:
- Module description and transcript of records in the case of achievements from other universities, other certificates, or proof of achievement.
- In the case of modules from UHH: printout of the performance account or transcript of records. (Waivable for achievements recorded in Stine).
- If necessary, exchange with the study coordination
- The chairperson of the examination board decides on the application.
- The academic office informs the applicant by mail about the implementation in STINE.
For advice on the CHE 140 module in the context of a stay abroad, please be sure to contact the Chemistry Academic office before the planned stay abroad.
Research internships/projects at external research institutions or universities
- The assignment of the project/internship to the subject must be clearly recognizable (in the nanosciences: physics and/or chemistry).
- The subject-related assignment must be confirmed by the person responsible for the subject or the person responsible for the examination board. For this purpose, an abstract on the planned research activity as well as the designation of the examination is required with the application.
- In the case of recognition for the research phase (introductory and preparatory project or project study in the nanosciences), the consent of the future supervisor/first examiner of the Master's thesis must be obtained in advance.
- A university professor from the department must be involved in the evaluation (grading).
Procedure:
- A short outline of the contents and the workload of the planned external credits must be submitted to the academic office in good time before the start of the project.
- The examination board will make a conditional decision on the application, and the academic office will inform the student of this conditional decision.
- After the external credits have been concluded, the student must complete the application for recognition in the STINE account and submit the relevant evidence to the academic office. The evidence must include details of the actual content, scope, and an assessment (grade).
- The examination board decides on or confirms the recognition, and the academic office takes over the communication to the student and the implementation in STINE.

Exams and registrations
Registrations and deregistration
Registration and deregistration for scheduled examinations, e.g. written examinations, are possible via STiNE up to 3 days before the examination date!
Registration for and deregistration from non-scheduled exams in physics modules are possible until the last day of lectures. Proseminars, seminars, and ABK modules are excluded.
Please note that Saturday is also a working day.
For exams from other departments (e.g. mathematics, chemistry) other deadlines may apply. Please inform yourself in the respective academic offices or on their websites.
In case of technical problems, students are requested to contact the physics academic office within the registration period for the exam. Only then do we have the possibility to report major technical problems to the RRZ in a comprehensible way.
The registration and deregistration in STiNE for modules, courses, and exams (graded as and graded) is the students' task. The President's Office has set up the familiar registration phases for this purpose.
Notes on deadlines for registration and deregistration for exams:
- The registration phase for exams via STiNE is no later than 23:59 seven days before the exam.
- Cancellation of exams via STiNE no later than 23:59 three days before the exam.
- Registration for oral exams: in person at the academic office.
Attention:
Previously, students could - within the valid registration deadlines - change their registration via the "Change" button. I.e. the action of deregistering and re-registering could be done in a single step. Since a STiNE update, the button is called "Deregister" and must be actively executed via the action of re-registering on the desired date.
Attempt and examination regulations
When am I allowed to participate in an exam?
- Participation in the module examinations requires registration with the office responsible for the examination procedure (academic office). Registration for module examinations is binding after the registration deadline (MIN-PO § 9).
- Registration for module examinations requires enrollment in the respective degree program. This enrollment also applies to participation in elective and optional modules offered by other subjects (MIN-PO § 9).
Notes on the examination regulations:
- For each module, you have a maximum of 4 examination attempts. There is no time limit for this. (Note the standard period of study: a 6-semester deadline for Bachelor's programs and a 4-semester deadline for Master's programs).
- The fourth examination attempt, which has so far only been provided for new students as of WiSe 2020/21, also applies to enrolled students who began their studies before WiSe 2020/21 - this means the change of the max. repetitions of examinations from 2 to 3 repetitions also for existing cohorts.
- Exception: final thesis only 1 retake attempt.
- You have to register explicitly for all exams! Without registration no participation in the exam!
- If you do not want to participate in the exam, deregister in due time! Otherwise, this counts as a failed attempt!
- In case of illness, immediately submit a medical certificate ärtzliches Attest (Prüfungsunfähigkeitsnachweis) (PDF) [RK1] to the Physics Academic Office!
- You have to register yourself for the second and third examination attempt! If you fail an exam or are absent due to illness (proof!), you will not automatically be registered for a retake!
Repeat exams
For each module, you have a maximum of 4 examination attempts.
Please note the standard period of study: 6 semesters for Bachelor's programs and 4 semesters for Master's programs).
For the thesis, there is a deadline for submission and only one retake attempt.
It is highly recommended to stick to the study plan, as this is the only way to guarantee that the modules are taken without overlapping.
When and how can I register for the repeat examination?
- In each semester in which a module is offered, there are two examination attempts or rounds. If you a) did not register for the first date or b) did not pass on the first date, you can register for the second date up to 3 days before the exam.
- As soon as a module that has not yet been completed is offered again, it is possible to register 'out of the old module' for the new courses (lectures, exercises, etc.) and for the new examination dates or rounds.
IMPORTANT: A new module registration is not necessary and therefore not possible.
It is therefore important to pay attention to whether a module is offered every semester or only annually. This information can be found for each module in the module tables or in the module handbooks.

There is a special support service for students at all Hamburg universities who, after a serious mental crisis, often also after inpatient treatment, would like practical help in successfully coping with the demands of their studies Unterstützungsangebot.
Standard period of study and exceeding
A bachelor's degree can be completed in the standard period of study of 6 semesters, and a master's degree in the standard period of study of 4 semesters.
Otherwise, the following applies: If a study program is not completed within 2 subject semesters above the standard period of study, a mandatory subject counseling with the preparation of a binding study plan must be made in the 2nd semester after the standard period of study. Otherwise, de-registration will follow.
MIN Examination Regulations for Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programs - to § 3 paragraph 3: "Students must attend a subject advising session before they have exceeded the standard period of study according to § 2 by two semesters if they have not yet completed all their examinations. Students who do not attend the subject advising session because they have exceeded the standard period of study will be exmatriculated under § 42 section 2 number 7 HmbHG." The extent of the outstanding achievements is irrelevant. For a subject consultation, please contact your Mentor or a member of the group of university professors in the Physics Department or the academic office.
If all examinations have been completed by the end of the standard period of study plus 2 semesters (i.e. the 8th semester in the Bachelor's program or the 6th semester in the Master's program) or if you have already registered for the final thesis, you do not need binding advising according to § 3.
