Teaching goals
The overarching goal of the group's teaching activities is to convey the science of astrophysics, the scientific world-view, as well as critical thinking skills. More specifically, for any given course, our goals are fourfold:
- To convey a solid grasp of the contents of the course. While technical details are important and matter, we value the understanding of concepts more highly, because it is conceptual understanding that creates motivating "Eureka" moments and lasts the longest.
- You should have more questions about a subject after you have taken a course than before. In other words, the course should enable you to ask meaningful questions that you could not even conceptualise before taking the course. These questions, ideally, will motivate you to seek answers, i.e. to further deepen your understanding of the subject and thus to further grow intellectually.
- This should help you understand that an education is not simply passively "received" but is rather an intellectual endeavour that requires your active participation and that you should be in control of.
- Finally, we strive to provide you with context: at the end of a course you should be able explain how your newly gained knowledge relates to and hopefully extends what you had already learned previously.

Einführung in die Astronomie I
Übersicht
Diese Vorlesung ist Teil I einer zwei-semestrigen B.Sc. Vorlesung, die die Grundlagen der Astronomie und Astrophysik vermittelt. Die Einführungsvorlesung richtet sich an Studierende des B.Sc. Physik ab dem 3. Fachsemester (ab dem 2. Fachsemester bei Zulassung im Sommersemester) und ist ein Angebot innerhalb des Wahlbereichs. In Teil I werden u.a. die folgenden Themen behandelt: Sonnensystem, Gravitation, Keplersche Gesetze, Strahlung, Sterne, Teleskope und Instrumente. Als Vorkenntnisse sind die Inhalte der ersten beiden Fachsemester B.Sc. Physik zwar nicht unbedingt erforderlich, aber dennoch hilfreich.

Einführung in die Astronomie II
Übersicht
Diese Vorlesung ist Teil II einer zwei-semestrigen B.Sc. Vorlesung, die die Grundlagen der Astronomie und Astrophysik vermittelt. Die Einführungsvorlesung richtet sich an Studierende des B.Sc. Physik ab dem 3. Fachsemester (ab dem 2. Fachsemester bei Zulassung im Sommersemester) und ist ein Angebot innerhalb des Wahlbereichs. In Teil II werden u.a. die folgenden Themen behandelt: Interstellare Materie, Sternentstehung und -entwicklung, Exoplaneten, Beobachtungen mit anderen „Boten“ (wie z.B. Gravitationswellen), die Milchstraße, Galaxien, Aktive Galaktische Kerne, intergalaktische Materie und Kosmologie. Als Vorkenntnisse werden die Inhalte von Teil I dieser Vorlesung vorausgesetzt, während die Inhalte der ersten beiden Fachsemester B.Sc. Physik zwar nicht unbedingt erforderlich, aber dennoch hilfreich sind.

Galaxy Evolution
Overview
The formation and evolution of galaxies is one of the main topics of contemporary astrophysical research. This advanced M.Sc. lecture course will comprehensively cover this topic from both an observational and theoretical perspective. We will explore the background cosmology, the linear and non-linear growth of cosmic structures, the formation of spiral and elliptical galaxies, as well as the observational techniques used to study galaxies. While not strictly required, it is definitely helpful to be aware of the contents of both parts of the B.Sc. introductory astronomy course. The course language is English.

Chemical Evolution of the Universe
Overview
Which physical processes have shaped the abundances of all of the elements in the Universe? What drives the evolution of these abundances? This advanced M.Sc. lecture course will comprehensively cover this topic from both an observational and theoretical perspective. We will explore the background cosmology, primordial nucleosynthesis, stellar structure, nucleosynthesis and evolution, neutron capture processes and the basics of galactic chemical evolution models. While not strictly required, it is definitely helpful to be aware of the contents of both parts of the B.Sc. introductory astronomy course. The course language is English.

Das moderne Universum
Übersicht
Diese Vorlesung richtet sich an Hörer und Hörerinnen aller Fakultäten sowie Kontaktstudierende. Dementsprechend werden alle Inhalte allgemein verständlich vermittelt. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, einen Eindruck vom Stand der Wissenschaft in einigen zentralen Bereichen der Astrophysik zu vermitteln. Die Themen reichen von der Kosmologie, Dunkler Energie und Dunkler Materie über Galaxien bis hin zu Exoplaneten. Außerdem werden einige moderne Teleskope und neuartige Beobachtungen (z.B. Gravitationswellen) behandelt. Vorkenntnisse werden nicht benötigt.
Leider können Studierende für den Besuch dieser Veranstaltung derzeit keine Leistungspunkte erhalten.
