Since 1968, Hamburg Observatory is part of the Department of Physics  of Universität Hamburg. With its double role as a museum and a university location (Campus Bergedorf), Hamburg Observatory is a special facility. Recently, the historical buildings house the Astronomy and Astrophysics research groups. Most important research areas are Exoplanets, Stellar Physics, Interstellar Medium and Star Formation, Extragalactic Astrophysics, Cosmology, Radio Astronomy, Magneto-Hydrodynamics, Radiative Transfer as well as High Performance Computing. Further research, including participating activities in the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe, is done on the Campus Bahrenfeld.

Freigeist Fellowship for Dr. Caroline Heneka

For the research project “Changing the way we look at the sky – computer vision astrophysics”, Quantum Universe Postdoc Dr. Caroline Heneka receives a Freigeist Fellowship by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Largest cosmic shock waves observed so far

An international team of astronomers led by the Hamburg Observatory made the most detailed images of the largest cosmic shock waves ever observed. The observations are based on data from the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa and have been published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Aurorae discovered on distant stars suggest hidden planets

Using the radio telescope LOFAR, scientists have discovered stars unexpectedly blasting out radio waves, possibly indicating the existence of hidden planets. The research was recently published in Nature Astronomy.
