ViaMachinae 3.0: finding stellar streams in GAIA using machine learning
Can you use an anomaly detection method from particle physics to search for stellar streams in the Milky Way? The answer is yes! In ViaMachinae 3.0, we build on the previous iterations of this stream finding method, utilizing the powerful anomaly detection algorithm CATHODE to discover close to 100 stream candidates. Among these are two highly interesting clusters of streams, which may indicate the presence of larger objects such as dwarf galaxy streams or non-trivial orbital dynamics resulting in bifurcation or fanning, and are promising and high-priority targets for further analysis.
