Abstract:
Recent advances in ultrafast experimental techniques, material synthesis, and innovative cavity designs have unlocked the potential for photo-engineering metastable phases across a broad class of quantum materials and simulators. In this talk, Denis Golež will present a systematic framework for analyzing emergent nonthermal orders in systems where dynamical bottlenecks constrain relaxation, based on the identification of approximately conserved quantities and their incorporation into a generalized Gibbs ensemble description. This approach provides a transparent route to characterizing long-lived nonequilibrium states beyond conventional thermal paradigms. Applications to Mott insulators, semiconductors, and layered transition metal dichalcogenides reveal a rich landscape of nonthermal phases, including exotic superconductivity, charge-density waves, and excitonic condensates.
