About the Institute
Research at the I. Institute of Theoretical Physics (I. ITP) focuses on condensed matter, nanostructures, and molecules. We formulate theories that describe the complex interaction of many quantum-mechanical degrees of freedom in these systems and can predict novel states of matter. By developing and applying numerical methods, we calculate both ground-state properties and dynamical behavior far from thermal equilibrium.
An important concern of the I. ITP is the further development of teaching in the field of theoretical physics. The institute is integrated in the research foci solid-state and nanostructure physics as well as laser physics and photonics and is involved in the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging: Cluster of Excellence Advanced Imaging of Matter.
