SFB Conference and Graduate School Meeting 2019 in Hohwacht
Our first SFB Conference Meeting of the new funding period took place from 11.11-13.11. For this meeting we focused our effort on stimulating cross-area cooperation. To develop a common understanding for the upcoming days of discussion, we planned the graduate school program, which focuses our efforts, not on specific projects but on the shared goals within the SFB. The students organized two discussion sessions. The first one was dedicated to the cross-area SFB goals [SFB.1-7]. And the second session focused on the more specific inter-area goals [1A-6A,1B-6B,1C-6C]. Each student presented his point of view on these goals within a small group of students.

Over the past meetings, the organization of small discussion groups has been well received among the students as it produces an environment that encourages the students to ask questions and to discuss issues openly. A proof of this concept is that many of the discussions that originated here extended over the next days to come. These discussions are the heart of the SFB conference, as many novel ideas are conceived here and then brought back to Hamburg.
Another, almost institutionalized, format for our young researchers is our Ph.D. poster session. In this poster session, the students get a good overview of the ongoing research within the SFB 925, and the preceding discussions can be intensified among the young researchers. For the new Ph.D. students among us, this poster session is also one of the first opportunities to present their work to a broader audience and getting direct feedback in a conducive environment.
The graduate school meeting took place on the last day, where the assembly of students was informed about the ongoing work of the graduate school and voted for their new student representatives. Additionally, the students had the chance to express their personal needs in general lectures, workshops, and soft-skill courses. This feedback is crucial for the tailor-made training for our young researchers, as it allows us to act on their specific needs dynamically.
