New advance: Hamburg intends to make the observatory UNESCO world heritage
22 June 2021
On the basis of a new report prepared by Dr. Matthias Hünsch (Förderverein), the city of Hamburg decided to make a new attempt in the contest for a world heritage nomination. Until the end of October, applications have to be prepared for the permanent conference of the Ministers of Education and the Arts of the federal states of Germany. This federal body decides on the German candidates to compete for a nomination of UNESCO after 2024.
In 2014, the conference did not include Hamburg Observatory into the tentative list of Germany. But now, it is composed of new experts and could maybe take more into account the category of technical monuments. Furthermore, UNESCO itself together with the IAU (International Astronomical Union) suggested to nominate more astronomical places. That's why, hopefully, chances for Hamburg Observatory with its unique collection of instruments from the period of the transition from observing astronomy to astrophysics are better in this turn.
