During two semesters as a student research assistant in our group, Gian-Luka Bertels, a Physics student at the University of Hamburg, contributed to the design and development of components for our dark matter experiments. In the process, he familiarised himself with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and learned how to design and adapt a variety of technical components for experimental research.

One part of Gian-Luka’s work focused on designing components that were subsequently manufactured using our 3D printer. Among these was a cooling box for silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), which can heat up significantly during operation. The box can be attached to a metal plate carrying the SiPM and is filled with dry ice during measurements. Once sealed with a lid, it provides efficient cooling and helps ensure stable detector performance.
In addition, Gian-Luka designed and adapted components for the construction of an optical Time Projection Chamber (oTPC), improving upon earlier designs. These aluminium components were manufactured by the UHH machine workshop and formed part of a six-way vacuum chamber. The chamber features different flanges on each side, each accommodating specific elements of the experimental setup.

Reflecting on his experience, Gian-Luka said: "Working for the group of Prof. Nikolopoulos not only provided deeper insights into real physical experiments, but also helped me learning about the working life of a physicist. It is also a nice preparation for writing your bachelor's or master's thesis.”
