Today one of the spare ALPS-II magnets was used by the MADMAX collaboration for the first operation of a newly developed high-precision piezoelectric motor inside a magnetic field.
The motor - capable of a position accuracy below 1 micrometer - was developed by the company JPE in collaboration with the University of Hamburg, and is part of the R&D program for the MADMAX experiment. Today it moved without problems and very reliably by 63 cm at a temperature of 30 K (-243.15 °C) inside the 5.3 T field of the ALPS-II magnet. With this, we are one step closer towards a novel axion experiment!
Update 27.01.2022
One day later, we went even further, and operated successfully at the very low temperature of only 5 K!
