Science with the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)
The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in an US/German flying infrared astronomical observatory.
SOFIA is an 80/20 project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
SOFIA is based on a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft carrying a reflecting telescope with a diameter of 2.7m (effective 2.5m).
The presentation will give an overview over the capabilities of the observatory, including a few scientific results. We will discuss the wavelength coverage, sensitivities, and observing modes, as well as limitations that arise from the specifics of an observational platform on-board of an aircraft. Particular emphasis will be given to the released on November 5h, 2021, "Cycle 10 Call for Proposals", the specific tools necessary for proposal, and how to successfully compete for observing time on SOFIA.
